- ALOE VERA
Aloe Vera is mostly known for the mucilaginous inner gel of the leaf. This is commonly applied to the skin to soothe and heal burns, cuts, rashes and abrasions.
The gooey gel is best used fresh. Simply grab the leaf and pull side to side to harvest it, then 'top' the thick side off. Run a sharp knife from the thick side down the middle *like you are filleting a fish*. with a spoon scoop out the gel contents and place into a bowel ready for use.
Aloe's wound healing properties are impressive. It can be used for reactive skin conditions, such as psoriasis, to ease irritation and inflammation. You will notice it's soothing coolness and relief it brings. We offer a Healing Balm and Healing Oil to assist people with these conditions, but this is a popular plant in Australia and can be an alternative for any fellow gardener who already has it in their garden.
Taken orally, Aloe Vera latex (the yellow lining under the plants skin) impacts the digestive system, aiding sluggish elimination and can be quite purgative due to the anthraquinone action. The gel is particularly helpful in healing gastric ulcers and stimulating the bowel. It also balances insulin and cholesterol.
HOT TIPS:
Aloe Vera is wonderfully hydrating and also stimulates dermal collagen and elastin production for glowing youthfulness.
CAUTIONS:
The cautions apply to the use of inner gel and latex when taken orally - not topical usage.
Mindful caution during pregnancy and lactation, and for children under age 12.
Contradicted for those with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
Be wise: check interactions with medications. Aloe is best taken orally only for short periods of time as it can be quite depleting on the systems of the body with extended use.
