Brain Boosting Herbs

Brain Boosting Herbs - Ginkgo, Brahmi & Rosemary.

The herbs in our Brain Boost Tincture stem from ancient China, India and Greece and they have been used for centuries for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help improve and protect brain function.

Ginkgo biloba

Ginkgo biloba or maidenhair is a tree native to China that has been grown for thousands of years for a variety of uses. Ginkgo supplements are associated with several health claims and uses, most of which focus on brain function and blood circulation.

Ginkgo’s antioxidant content may be the reason behind many of its health claims (1'

2). Antioxidants combat or neutralize the damaging effects of free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive particles that are produced in the body during normal metabolic functions, such as converting food to energy or detoxification.

In traditional Chinese medicine, ginkgo seeds were used to open “channels” of energy to different organ systems, including the kidneys, liver, brain and lungs.

Ginkgo’s apparent ability to increase blood flow to various parts of the body may be the origin of many of its supposed benefits.

Ginkgo has been repeatedly evaluated for its ability to reduce anxiety, stress and other symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline associated with aging.

Some studies show a marked reduction in the rate of cognitive decline in people with dementia using ginkgo, but others fail to replicate this result.

A review of 21 studies revealed that when used in conjunction with conventional medicine, ginkgo extract may increase functional capabilities in those with mild Alzheimer’s (12).

Another review evaluated four studies and found a significant reduction in a spectrum of symptoms associated with dementia when ginkgo was used for 22–24 weeks (13).

Ginkgo has the potential to interact unfavourably with certain medications. Some interactions could increase the risk of bleeding.

Possible adverse medication interactions include:

  • Blood thinners (Warfarin, aspirin)
  • SSRIs/MAOIs/antidepressants (Prozac, Zoloft)
  • NSAIDS (ibuprofen, naproxen)

Bacopa monnieri - Brahmi

Bacopa monnieri, also called brahmi, water hyssop, thyme-leaved gratiola, and herb of grace, is a staple plant in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Bacopa monnieri has been used by Ayurvedic medical practitioners for centuries, there are many purposes for their use, but some include improving memory, reducing anxiety, and treating epilepsy (2)

Brahmi has excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidants properties.

Antioxidants are substances that help protect against cell damage caused by potentially harmful molecules called free radicals. Research suggests that damage caused by free radicals is linked to many chronic conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers (3).

Research suggests that Bacopa monnieri may help enhance brain function.

For example, one study in mice showed that supplementing with Bacopa monnieri improved their spatial learning and ability to retain information (14).

The same study also found that it increased dendritic length and branching. Dendrites are parts of nerve cells in the brain that are closely linked to learning and memory (14).

Rosemarinus Officinalis - Rosemary

Rosemary is native to the Mediterranean, this is one of my favourite ancient beauties to grow in the garden and use in my home.  This is predominantly thought of as a culinary herb, which is understandable it creates an aromatic melody, igniting our senses as we use it in our cooking.

Medicinally, much of the historic use mirrors how we use it today. One that stands out to me is how it is used as a brain tonic, to enhance memory and sharpen concentration. The ancient Greeks held Rosemary in high regard for this purpose alone, you may take note of the crowns made and warn around their heads. Modern day it is used with great value as a cerebral antioxidant for challenging neurological conditions such as ADHD, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.

Rosemary works it's magic;

  • free radicals
  • soothes nervous systems
  • relieving tension headaches
  • easing anxiety
  • lifting depression
  • encourages recovery with illnesses
  • improves poor circulation
  • reduces high blood pressure
  • aiding in varicose veins
  • oxygenates the blood
  • stimulates appetite
  • cleanses, tonifies and protects the liver
  • slows the ageing process.

This beautiful evergreen cleanses and brings blessings when planted at your front door, it stands strong with its pure and peaceful spirit. This is a plant that will always be in our garden, used in our home and used topically and internally to heal and enhance our body's health.
